We were delighted to host the loveable Trent Dalton back at his old school on Thursday 3 August. Trent was invited to talk with some of our remarkable teachers and share stories from his time at school and struggles as a child living in Housing Commission Bracken Ridge that led to the semi-autobiographical book Boy Swallows Universe.

Trent shared his stories and challenges with the 4017 community that turned out in droves to enjoy the night, and was even lovely enough to stay afterwards and sign books for all of his adoring fans.

Trent said of his time at school, "The suburbs of Bracken Ridge, Brighton and Sandgate are sacred places to me. They are in my blood. I still walk some Sunday afternoons with my daughters on the low tide mud flats off Flinders and bore them with stories about the magic of 4017. My years at Bracken Ridge High were wondrous and tumultuous and life-changing and any good fortune I've had later in life is deeply rooted in the kindness of the teachers and the lifelong friends in that school who shaped my early life. I can't wait to come back and say thanks."

Our panel of teachers Brian Jentz (who was also a former teacher of Trent's) with Michael Rooney and Rose Thrupp asked questions that sparked conversations and beautiful moments throughout the evening.

Thank you again Trent for your time and gracious attitude to the teaching profession - we were honoured to have you her with us for the night.
